Alastair Galbraith

New Zealand's Alastair Galbraith is, to my mind, a singular musical voice that everyone should know - sadly few do. The first album I heard by him was mirrorwork. It changed the way I thought about the concept of "song" in ways that I can't really express. It is now available along with some of his other works at Bandcamp.

To my taste, the 2008 album Orb is, next to mirrorwork, the stand out from the four available on bandcamp.

But you really can't go wrong with anything that Galbraith has been involved with. If you can track it down his work with Plagal Grind is particularly nice.

Being immersed in Galbraith's works was a huge player in my being able to contribute in a small way to the Dustdevil & Crow records, which are really some of the work I am most proud of. Bendle's work is tilted on a different axis than Galbraith's, but they share some strange orthogonal relationship to each other and the rest of the musical world.

bendle - jesus

One of my favorite new releases, a little tune called jesus is from a great friend here at pen & mallet. The main instigator behind dustdevil & crow, bendle has been doing his own thing musically since the late seventies (e.g., the door and the window and The 49 Americans and many, many other projects you can check out at his bandcamp page). This one is a collaboration with rob tarana and has been in heavy rotation since I downloaded it.

Blue Mountain Review

'
A quick one today: there's a nice review of Taking Blue Mountain By Stages over at Recent music heroes. So I'll take this as an opportunity to remind you to check out its companion album over at bendle's bandcamp page...and chuang tzu dreamed that he was me is one of my favorite releases lately...and would be whether or not the one song I had a hand in was on it. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Take a listen:

Bendle and Michael have promised me some help with the aboombong admixture project. And I can't wait to hear what they come up with.

aboombong - Taking Blue Mountain By Stages (with dustdevil & crow)

Much of the discourse musicians have with fans is about the creative process. "Where do you get your ideas?" or "How did you get it to sound like that?" Usually, the musician doesn't have much to say on that front or comes off as pretentious and boring. I am hoping to avoid that with this post as I take you through a journey towards a completed song included on the latest dustdevil & crow release, ...and chuang tzu dreamed that he was me, which is officially coming out September 1st. The song is one that was initiated by aboombong, and developed by the whole crew in stages. The progression provides, to me, a nice view of the collaborative process. In this case, one that could not have occurred in an earlier era as the members of the group are spread out around the globe.

The journey begins with a song from the 2nd dustdevil & crow release, while speaking softly you can hear the insects sing. The song is titled Broken Skin and goes like this:

In the process of creating this track, and before we had the wonderful violin work of rob tarana, I created a drone as a background. We never used it, but I liked the way it sounded. The drone was created from the guitars already included on the track. Here they are by themselves:

Here is the drone that was left on the cutting room floor:

When it came time to do the next dustdevil & crow release, I remembered liking that little drone, and decided to turn it into something. Here is what I sent bendle & michael, a track I called Blue Mountain Drop:

When bendle sent it back to me, he had reworked some lyrics from an old The Door and The Window track called Rain (available on his bandcamp page). The resulting track, now Blue Mountain sounded like this:

Then michael added his trademark wall of guitars and sent us this:

Finally, with the help of nick toombs' additional guitar work, bendle's careful mixing, and mastering work by michael, we get the final song as it appears on the album still titled Blue Mountain. I decided I liked all the various steps towards this final track, so I am releasing an EP that details the journey on my bandcamp page to help promote ...and chuang tzu dreamed that he was me. You can hear the whole journey here:

The rest of the dustdevil & crow album is really good too and bendle is selling physical copies on his bandcamp page...don't miss out.

another best of 2010 mix

Again, this one ain't mine, but I have to pass it along. This one is from Dying for Bad Music and features artists from the Free Music Archive including DUSTdevil & crow. The FMA is also home to albums by aboombong and ¡para!helion and is really one of the best places to find DIY music available today. Check other best of FMA 2010 mixes over at the FMA, or join up and create your own.

Update: asynchronic is included in the spotinews mega-post of 100 notable albums of 2010.

DUSTdevils on the wind

A big friend of the show post tonight. DUSTdevils are getting some well deserved recognition over at WFMU's beware of the blog. I've been a long-time fan of DUSTdevils ever since I first heard Rhenyard's Grin. DUSTdevils were a big influence on Choke and it was finding all of their albums over at YoungMossTongue that largely inspired me to start Pen & Mallet. At the time I never would have guessed that would lead to an opportunity to collaborate (as aboombong) with one of my favorite musicians... but that is exactly what happened.

The WFMU piece features a nice interview, some great video's (here and here) and a link to some previously unreleased DUSTdevils tracks. I thought I would share those with you and encourage you to pop over to beware of the blog or his place and leave Michael a greeting in thanks for all the great music he's provided over the years.

amnemonic, dustdevil & crow: what I did for summer vacation

This summer has been a particularly enjoyable and productive one. While completing the azwarm album and the boom dispenser remixs project (as I have mentioned previously), I was honored to be asked to collaborate on the newest Dustdevil & Crow album, while speaking softly you can hear the insects sing. It was completed recently and is now available on the Free Music Archive. I have also added amnemonic over at the FMA (HERE). The FMA is a great resource, chock full of amazing music with easy access to high-quality MP3's. It also allows you to create custom mixes with an easy to use interface. I have created a mix with both while speaking softly you can hear the insects sing and amnemonic that will allow you to listen to or download both albums in one click. You can also easily embed this player or send it to your friends to help us get the word out (always much appreciated).

For those audiophiles out there who are looking for lossless versions of either of these albums, well, of course, they are available. Bendle has put both Dustdevil & Crow albums up at his bandcamp page for free (along with lots of other goodies), and, of course, all the aboombong releases are available in lossless formats on bandcamp (name your price) as well. Don't forget that I will email a special access code to anyone naming a price of $5 or more that is good for limited edition bonus material from amnemonic. You can also get access to this bonus material by donating directly using the "donate" buttons here at Pen & Mallet, or the "tip the artist" button at the Free Music Archive.

UPDATE2.1: Thanks to Dying For Bad Music and The Couch Sessions for helping to spread the word. And check out this short film featuring the opening minutes of Cromsby Grovernor's Jujujaiponmolam. Also a NSFW friend of the show note: Swellco & Swellco are getting some notice for exposing the underbelly (and more, much more) of the city that loves you back.

Please note that there is a special limited edition bonus track available for the first 200 folks who name a price of $5 or more over at bandcamp, or donate (from the button below) $5 or more to Pen & Mallet. UPDATE: in a totally uncoordinated coincidence, the new dustdevil & crow, while speaking softly you can hear the insects sing is also out. It was a real honor to be invited to work on this one. Check it out and spread the word.
UPDATE2.7: The first review of amnemonic is in and it made me blush. Now featured over at Disquiet with some very positive words. Also thanks to Nadia for a nice review over at the couch sessions and to Estonia's Recent Music Heroes for a very positive(?) review (google translate had a hard time with the Estonian, but I see a rating of 10.0 and lots of nice phrases scattered throughout) ; and thanks to Disruptive Platypus, Dying For Bad Music, Living Exposed, The Sound of Eye, The Sirens Sound, geometria innamorata, & Exile on Moan Street for helping to spread the word. The latest review of "asynchronic" over at rym deserves mention as well (by Ily, August 14th).

Odds & Ends

Just some quick updates and heads-ups to hold ya'll over 'til the next round of new releases.

1) The Siren's Sound recently featured Choke's eponymous E.P. along with some kind words after previously giving props to the Boom Dispenser remixs and to azwarm's first. UPDATE: also, Boom Dispenser is currently featured at geometria innamorata while Daymare is featured over at Anti-Gravity Bunny and a nice review of asynchronic has shown up over at Beyond the Valley of Ultrahits and A Chronic Groove Feeder is being featured over at All, Everyone, United. For the DIY musician, word of mouth from our kind supporters is invaluable and this help with promotion of our work is much appreciated.

2) 3 Bells Gone from azwarm now included in a nice mix over at Subversion. Take a listen to some other excellent ambient music mixes while you're there.

3) The next dustdevil & crow is coming along nicely with aboombong contributing drums/percussion, drones, keys & guitar alongside a host of other talented guests. You can wet your appetite on the first release over at the FMA, or listen to bendle's solo work on bandcamp.

4) New azwarm and new aboombong are both in the works with summer release dates very likely.

In the meantime: here's a little video from Fez Dispenser's grandpa Mr. Griddles - this one's called "Grand Central." (Buy Mr. Griddles here).

DUSTdevil & Crow - now on FMA

While Walking Slowly You Can See the Grasses Grow, the latest by DUSTdevil & Crow, is now available through the Free Music Archive. As mentioned in a previous post, they are working on a new release and I have the honor of contributing some drums and noise to the affair in between working on the new aboombong /Fez Dispenser remix project, putting together tracks for the next aboombong release (due this summer), and playing drums with some very talented local kids in a new post-rock/math-rock trio. Enjoy.

aboombong: Fez Dispenser, DUSTdevil & Crow

This is just a quick note to pass along some aboombong news. The response to the latest, asynchronic, has been really great. Keep spreading the word. Aboombong and Fez Dispenser are working on a remix project that will be out later this year on Skin & Barrel Music. And I am currently working with DUSTdevil & Crow on some tracks for their latest project. If you haven't heard their last one, check it out here. One-half of DUSTdevil & Crow, bendle, has just put his latest up on bandcamp for your listening pleasure...check it out below.
